Why Has the Bolt Broken on My Xtracto? It’s Designed To
If you use your Xtracto regularly, particularly for heavy-duty extraction work, you may eventually find that the bolt securing the hook has broken. At first, this might seem like a problem - after all, nobody wants a component on their tool to break during use - but that’s its job. The Xtracto’s shear pin is an intentional, sacrificial component that helps protect your tool from overload and potentially much more serious damage.

What is a shear pin?
The Xtracto hook is secured using a specially supplied carriage bolt. This bolt performs an important job beyond simply holding the hook in position - it acts as a shear pin.
A shear pin is designed to fail when a certain level of force or overload is reached. Rather than allowing excessive force to be transferred into the Xtracto's more expensive and important components, the shear pin breaks first. Think of it as a built-in weak point that’s there to protect the tool, not because the tool is weak.
Why would a shear pin break?
The Xtracto is designed to make demanding extraction jobs significantly easier, but some applications can involve very high levels of resistance. When the force required to extract a particularly stubborn pin, stake or post becomes excessive, the shear pin can reach its designed failure point.
At that stage, the bolt breaks - this is an intended part of the Xtracto's design.
The alternative would be for that excessive load to continue through the hook and into other parts of the tool. That could potentially result in much more expensive damage or create a safety risk. So, if a shear pin breaks during particularly heavy use, it has effectively done the job it was designed to do.
A broken shear pin doesn't mean your Xtracto has failed
It's important not to confuse a broken shear pin with a failure of the Xtracto itself. The shear pin is a sacrificial component, deliberately designed to be replaceable.
Xtracto is supplied with the appropriate bolts for this purpose, including a spare. Keeping replacement shear pins available means you can quickly get back to work if one breaks during heavy-duty use.

Why you must use the correct shear pin
Never replace a broken shear pin with an ordinary bolt or a different type of bolt other than those provided with the Xtracto. It might seem tempting to use another bolt that happens to fit, but the shear pin has been selected specifically to perform its protective function.
The wrong bolt may be stronger or weaker than the intended component and therefore may not shear at the correct load. If the bolt doesn't fail when it is supposed to, excessive force could instead be transferred into the Xtracto itself.
Using an incorrect bolt can also void your Xtracto’s warranty and - more importantly - may result in serious tool damage or personal injury.
How do I replace the shear pin on my Xtracto?
Make sure the Xtracto is positioned horizontally on a flat, stable and solid surface. Then:
1. Using a 13mm wrench, remove the nut from the broken shear pin
2. Pull out the remaining pin and remove the hook if necessary
3. Position the hook ready for reinstallation
4. Insert the correct replacement shear pin through the hook on the slotted side
5. Fasten the nut using a 13mm wrench
Now, your Xtracto is ready to get back to work!
Always follow the instructions in your Xtracto User Guide and use only the supplied or specified replacement shear pins.
Another useful feature built into the Xtracto
Heavy use doesn't just affect the shear pin. Over time, the edges of the Xtracto hook can also become worn. Fortunately, the hook can be installed with its opening facing either left or right.
When the gripping edges become worn and you notice that the hook isn't gripping as effectively, simply rotate the hook to use the other edge.
This helps extend the useful life of the hook and maintain a good grip during extraction.
Heavy-duty performance needs smart protection
The Xtracto is designed to tackle tough extraction jobs, and demanding applications can put significant forces through the tool. That's why the shear pin is such an important part of the design.
It's better for a small, inexpensive and easily replaceable component to fail than for excessive force to cause damage to the main tool.
So the next time you're working hard with your Xtracto and hear a snap, don't automatically assume something has gone wrong - check the shear pin.
If it’s broken, the Xtracto's built-in overload protection has done exactly what it was designed to do. Replace it with the correct Xtracto shear pin, check the hook and continue with the job safely.
